FEP protocol converter for PLC <-> UNIX SCADA
Thermal power plant uses natural gas or heating oil as fuel. Its role in the most expensive energy source power system is to provide energy to start up Krško nuclear power plants and cover the peak power consumption.
Protocol converter (Front End Process computer) routes data transmission between controllers and SCADA supervisory UNIX computer. Converter is talking to different controllers with different protocols.
Block diagram of processes which communicate with SCADA systems and PLC controllers running on a computer with protocol converter is presented in a picture. Here is a protocol structure of the system and processes for data exchange via the process image memory. Realized protocol with the controllers are Modbus and Hostlink.
Software part has been written in C language and built on the Linux operating system. Table of signals that are transmitted between the systems are fully configurable. Individual processes on the Linux operating system are running completely autonomous as daemon processes. Data exchange is processed via shared memory, which represents a form of interprocess communication in UNIX systems.
